Speak to King Roald at the Varrock Palace.
Speak to King Roald, who can be found in the Varrock Palace to begin the quest. While speaking to him, choose the 'greet the king' option and he will inform you that he has lost contact with a friend of his named Drezel. Drezel is a monk who is found at the Temple of Paterdomus, located northeast of Varrock. He will ask you to investigate the temple and check up on Drezel, then report back to him.
Leave the palace and head to the Temple of Paterdomus, following the path north outside of the Varrock east gate. Where you come across an eastern path, take this and follow the path east to Canfiis until you reach the temple.
Checking up on Drezel:
Once arriving, choose the 'knock-at' option by right clicking on the large door. You will be answered by a voice claiming to be Drezel and they will ask you do to a favor for them, which is to kill the dog located within the dungeon to the north.
After agreeing to do the favor, head north to a trapdoor and go down it. You will now be inside an underground passage and notice a large dog called Cerberus (level 33) guarding it, kill it. Killing Cerberus should be fairly easy, however lower levels may want to eat as needed.
Informing King Roald:
Next, Knock at the large door again. The voice claiming to be Drezel will reply and suggests you inform King Roald what has happened.
Return to the Varrock Palace, the quickest way here is either by using the Varrock lodestone teleport method or the Varrock teleport spell and walking north. Enter the palace and speak to King Roald who will be outraged at your actions and explains that Cerberus was guarding the temple and Misthalin from monsters that are found in Morytania. He will suggest that you return to the temple, investigate and correct the problem right away.
Discovering the Real Problem:
Now return to the temple and open the large door, kill the Monks of Zamorak (level 23) until one drops a Golden key. After you have obtained a Golden key, head up either of the staircases on the eastern side of the room to the second floor of the temple. Now head to the south-western corner of the room and climb the ladder to the third floor of the temple, here you will find Drezel locked in a cell.
Speak with Drezel, using the 'talk through' option on the cell door and he will explain that the River Slave, which the temple was built on, was protecting Misthalin from the evil within Morytania and preventing it from crossing into Misthalin. He will explain that Saradomin had blessed the river which was what prevented the evil from crossing, however it has been corrupted and he needs your help to restore it and save the temple. Drezel will also ask you to help trap the vampire, which will allow him to escape.
Head in to the dungeon located north of the temple, open the gate in the southern area of the passage and go through it following the path until you reach a large room with monuments surrounding a well in it. Study the monuments until you come across one with an Iron key, use your Golden key on the monument to swap your golden key for the Iron key. While you are near the well, use your bucket on it to obtain some Murky water from the river.
Now, go to Drezel and unlock the cell door with the Iron key, speak with Drezel inside the cell and ask him to bless the bucket of murky water. Once blessed, use the Bucket of water on the Morytania coffin to trap the vampire inside which will allow Drezel to escape. After doing this, speak to him again and he will ask you to meet him within the dungeon below the temple.
Purifying the River:
Return to the dungeon and head into the room with the monuments, speak to Drezel here and he will inform you that you will need to purify the river with Rune essence in order to remove the Zamorak magic which is corrupting the river. Give Drezel your 25 un-noted Pure essence if you already have it with you, if not bank. If you are using Rune essence for the quest you will need to bank twice for a total of 50 Rune essence. Those with the Wicked hood may find it more convenient to withdraw essence to save time and inventory space.
After giving Drezel the proper amount of essence, he will re-purify the river salve and explain a little about the Morytania lands that are beyond the holy barrier which will complete the quest. Congratulations!
