RuneScape Reignited has just been announced during our RuneFest 2026 Summit, and it is the culmination of what we have been building towards this year, while simultaneously being the start of a brand new chapter.

RuneScape Reignited
Having spent the entirety of 2026 rebuilding and restoring RuneScape, the game is now the best it's been in over a decade.
Integrity-breaking aspects like Dailyscape, Auras and MTX Items ejected from the game. High-impact projects like the Dungeoneering Remaster, the Player Avatar overhaul, the Player-Owned-House rework and the Grand Exchange improvements. New feature implementations like the API & Plugins project. Content expansions like Havenhythe! Rebalances that affect numerous areas of play and experience. All of this done alongside our community: previewing changes before they go live, engaging in discussions and listening to the feedback that has helped fix the very foundations of RuneScape and made it feel like... RuneScape again.
All of this has been done to enable RuneScape to continue to grow in a healthy way and for the community to flourish again. And we're not slowing down anytime soon! The 2027 Roadmap continues to be packed with new content and restoration updates that you will want to experience as they go live.
If you've ever felt lost or left behind in RuneScape, or have been unsure of how to come back or where to begin... There genuinely has never been a better time to jump back in or to experience the full adventure from the start – so we’ve made a reason to do just that.
Reignited is a new permanent character type that comes with a brand-new economy and hiscores with no paid progression available. It plays out in the same worlds that all existing characters are already playing in, and all Reignited characters will have free access to members' content for the first ten days following its launch.
Reignited is the culmination of everything that we have been building towards this year, and yet it is also the start of a brand new chapter.
For new players, this is an opportunity to experience 25 years of RuneScape, from a new shared starting point and as a community, almost as if the game were released for the first time today.
This is also a chance for the next chapter of RuneScape's history to be written. To be able to walk in the footsteps of the legends before us, and carve your own story into the Hall of Legends.
For existing players, this character-based approach means we can deliver what we promised: to see your worlds thriving again and helping the community grow in all directions. Just as how Ironman players live among existing players today, Reignited characters will be part of your experience inside Gielinor every day.
And then there is The Hall of Legends. Here, past heroes will be honoured, and new legends will be immortalised. This will be the moment for you to express your mastery and skill among thousands of new and returning players. All the many world-first achievements will be available once again, and those who manage to achieve such a feat will be immortalised with a permanent statue representing their character and the achievement.
RuneScape Reignited, The Adventure Guide and the next leap for Remastering RuneScape, will all arrive in a single update, launching on December 2nd.
And to celebrate the launch of Reignited as a community, for the first 10 days following the launch on December 2nd, every Reignited character will have free access to members' worlds!

Reignited FAQ:
What's the difference between a current ("Veteran") character and a Reignited character?

Both characters will access RuneScape in the same worlds and walk through Gielinor side by side, though Reignited characters will also be able to access Reignited-only worlds. Veteran and Reignited characters will not be able to trade with one another, but Reignited characters will be able to trade with other Reignited characters.
Each character type will have its own Grand Exchange: The currently existing Grand Exchange just for Veterans and a new Grand Exchange just for Reignited characters. Switching between Grand Exchanges is not possible and is determined by character type. Veteran and Reignited characters will not be able to share the same boss instances, but they will be able to form or join clans and homesteads together.

What's the benefit of creating a Reignited character?

Reignited characters will enter a RuneScape that is launching like a new game but that has the benefit of 25 years of content. RuneScape has undergone years of improvements and the arrival of the Adventure Guide and the Remastered Journey on December 2nd will make it genuinely worth experiencing from the beginning once more.
We believe that the promise of a new start within the MMO space on an completely level playing field and no unfair advantages for anyone will provide players with the chance to create new community storylines and engage with the game and its features in a way that is unconstrained by the maturity of a 25 year old economy.
Certain items, including materials that may currently be in abundant supply to Veteran characters may be harder to come by for Reignited characters as their market won't be saturated in the same way. However, this also provides an opportunity for those willing to build a character around sourcing, creating and providing those rare items or resources.
Additionally, the Hall of Legends provides a chance for any new player to achieve world first achievements across an array of areas in the game, including combat, skilling, quests, exploration and even some that are a little bit more silly. Those who manage to achieve such a feat will be immortalised with a permanent statue representing their character and the achievement in the Hall of Legends...
And to give everyone the chance to try it out for themselves, all Reignited characters will have free access to members' worlds for the first ten days following its launch. That's from December 2nd through till December 12th.
Will Reignited replace the current "Veteran" community of RuneScape? What's happening to the current playerbase?

The current "Veteran" community of RuneScape will remain as such. Reignited is a character type that exists in parallel and our plans are for these two character types to co-exist in the same way that Veteran and Ironman types currently co-exist. We expect that some existing players may choose to stay with their veteran character while some will start a separate Reignited character.
Newly created characters will be given the choice between a Veteran character and its access to a mature economy and a Reignited character with its access to a new economy.
Will the progress of Veterans no longer matter following the introduction of Reignited?

Veteran characters and the progress players have made on them will continue to matter as much as it does today and we remain committed to it. We see Veterans and Reignited characters co-existing side by side, rather than one being preferred.
Will content be built just with Reignited characters in mind?

No - all content will be developed to be relevant to all character types, though there may be nuances in how each community economy reacts to new content after launch, given their differing levels of maturity. Our 2027 Roadmap and our Arc format are especially catered towards providing content for all levels of progression throughout the year, whether you're an experienced end-gamer or your character is still in the early- or mid-game of RuneScape.
How will Reignited affect the player populations on existing worlds? Will this split the playerbase?

We expect that some existing players may choose to stay with their Veteran character while some will start a separate Reignited character. Newly created characters will be given the choice between a Veteran character and its access to a mature economy and a Reignited character with its access to a new economy.
The playerbase should not experience a split as shared worlds will exist and we plan to grow our community significantly in all directions. We are additionally working on improving how our worlds cope with high player counts and reducing the impact they have on lag - the result of this work should mean that all worlds, whether Veteran or Reignited, will be able to host higher player counts while remaining stable and fast.
Can characters be changed between types? Can a Veteran character become a Reignited character or vice versa?

No. Enabling this would compromise the integrity of the distinct economies. However, Veteran and Reignited characters will be able to share the same worlds and will not be cut off from each other apart from in economy or progress impacting aspects.
What's the long term vision for Reignited characters? Will they ever be merged back into the same economy as the Veteran economy?

We want to first give Reignited a chance to stand on its own, without implementing an arbitrary cut-off period. There are no predetermined plans for a merge at this stage but we'll keep all options on the table in continuing to deliver what's best for players. For now, however, our main priority is to safeguard the economic stability of both Veterans and Reignited character types. As with Ironman, players have, over time, asked for changes in how the different character types interact. As RuneScape continues to evolve, we will be sure to be listening closely to ensure this is a character type that feels right within the wider RuneScape experience.
What kind of MTX will be available to Reignited characters?

We removed Treasure Hunter from RuneScape earlier this year in January 2026, and when Reignited launches there will be no more integrity breaking MTX items present anywhere in RuneScape. Reignited characters will be able to purchase cosmetic overrides through the marketplace, but Radiant stars will not be available to these characters.

We believe that RuneScape is shaping up to be the best it has been for many years. We have already spent the entirety of 2026 rebuilding and restoring the game and have plans to continue building upon that work throughout 2027.
The implementation of the Adventure Guide and the Remastering of the early journey are all set to be the perfect moment to welcome new and returning players to the game, who we firmly believe will be just as delighted by the content of our 2027 roadmap as our existing playerbase. Reignited is the culmination of a huge amount of work to restore the foundations of RuneScape, but it is also the launchpad for the game's future and will benefit very well from the continued love and dedication that we will pour into all character types and aspects of RuneScape.
Will Reignited characters require a separate membership?

Reignited is a new character type similar to Ironman and will therefore require its own membership. To give everyone the chance to try it out for themselves, all Reignited characters will have free access to members' worlds for the first ten days following its launch. How will you protect the integrity of Reignited?

To ensure that botters and other bad actors do not take advantage of the free offer or compromise the integrity of Reignited at any point, we are improving our anti-cheat processes and policies including prohibiting the use of Gold Swapping into or out of Reignited. We will share more about rules and cheating in RuneScape before December's launch of Reignited.
