Witch's Potion OSRS Quest Guide

Help Hetty the witch brew a magical potion by gathering four unusual ingredients and drinking from her cauldron.

Walkthrough

  1. Travel to Rimmington and enter Hetty’s house in the south-east part of the village.
  2. Speak to Hetty and tell her you want to learn more about the black arts / become one with your darker side.

  1. Hetty explains she is brewing a potion and needs four ingredients: a rat’s tail, burnt meat, an eye of newt, and an onion.
  2. Go west of Hetty’s house into the archery shop and kill a level 1 rat to obtain a rat’s tail. (Important: You can only receive a rat’s tail after starting the quest. Giant rats do not drop it.)

  1. Obtain burnt meat. You can either:
    • Kill a giant rat just north of the chapel graveyard south-east of Rimmington (or a cow south of Falador), cook the meat, then deliberately burn it, or
    • Use any cooked meat on the fireplace inside Hetty’s house (or any fire/range) until it becomes burnt meat.
    You can also buy raw meat from Wydin in the Port Sarim food store if needed.
  2. Buy an eye of newt from Betty’s Magic Emporium in Port Sarim for 3 coins. The shop is marked with a fire rune symbol on the minimap.
  3. Pick an onion from the field directly north of Rimmington (east of Melzar’s Maze), or from the backyard of Fred the Farmer’s farmhouse west of the sheep pen in Lumbridge.
  4. Once you have all four items (rat’s tail, burnt meat, eye of newt, and onion) in your inventory, return to Hetty and speak to her.
  5. Hetty will place the ingredients into her cauldron and tell you to drink from it.
  6. Drink from the cauldron.
  7. The quest is now complete.

Ingredient Locations

Important: The rat’s tail can only be obtained after you have started the quest by speaking to Hetty. Giant rats will never drop it.

Rat’s tail: Kill a level 1 rat inside the archery shop west of Hetty’s house.
Burnt meat: Cook any meat then burn it on a fire or range (the fireplace in Hetty’s house works perfectly).
Eye of newt: Buy from Betty in Port Sarim for 3 coins.
Onion: Pick from the field north of Rimmington or from Fred the Farmer’s backyard in Lumbridge.

Completing the Quest

  1. After giving Hetty all four ingredients, drink from the cauldron when prompted.
  2. The quest finishes immediately and you receive your rewards.

Tips

  • Start the quest first — you cannot get a rat’s tail beforehand.
  • The fireplace inside Hetty’s house is the most convenient place to burn the meat.
  • If you already have burnt meat, an eye of newt, or an onion in the bank, you can skip collecting those items.
  • This is one of the shortest quests in the game and can be finished in a few minutes.
  • The quest originally awarded Evil Magic experience in RuneScape Classic.
