What's happening with MTX Items in RuneScape

On October 29th, 2025, we asked RuneScape players to help decide the future of MTX. Over 120,000 players cast their votes in favour of supporting its removal. In response, we retired Treasure Hunter on January 19th, 2026, marking a major milestone and a real turning point in RuneScape's journey.

Alongside Treasure Hunter's removal earlier this year in January, we removed more than 225 MTX items from sale, preventing any new versions of these items from entering the game. At the time, we made it clear that these legacy items would not remain indefinitely and that further action would follow once enough time had passed for most players to have made use of them.

Since then, we have spent 2026 on the Road to Restoration, addressing many pain points in RuneScape's underlying design while also adjusting, rebalancing and revamping many areas of RuneScape to be more suitable for the Treasure Hunter-free game that it aspires to be and for its bright future.

Now, the next step is approaching. As part of our continued commitment to delivering a fairer, more consistent game experience, we're ready to share our plans for the remaining MTX items still present in RuneScape that were obtained through Treasure Hunter and what you can expect in the months ahead.

Here's the current schedule:

  • Today, we are letting you know what we have planned for all associated items.
  • We will run our next DoubleXP event in November. This will be the best opportunity for you to use up any remaining MTX items you may have banked.
  • Shortly after the DXP event ends we will run a shorter MTX send-off event (more on this in a moment), which will be an opportunity for you to get rid of any MTX items that you did not want to use for their designed purpose.
  • At the end of this second event, the MTX items remaining in the game will be removed, revised or retained according to the details shared further down in this blog.
  • The final date, by which all items must be used up, is November 23rd, 2026 (prior to the game update on that same day).

Marking the occasion with The Well of Restoration

At the end of the DXP event, we'll be running a limited-time event to give you one final opportunity to make use of any remaining items and currencies. During the event, you will be able to donate eligible MTX items to the "Well of Restoration" in exchange for GP (We'll make sure to share more on this ahead of time).

Each item contributed will award a set amount of coins, providing a simple way to convert surplus items before they leave the game. Once the event concludes, any remaining items marked for removal that were not donated will be automatically converted into GP, though at a reduced rate.

To commemorate the occasion, all players who log in during the event will receive the exclusive title, "The Restorer". We'll confirm any further details when November rolls around and we're closer to the date.

Exact timings of either of these events will be confirmed in the November Month Ahead.

Now let's get into the details of exactly what is happening with each item...

Revise, Retain, Remove

Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all solution, we've carefully reviewed all affected items and assigned them to one of three categories: Revise, Retain or Remove . This allows us to rework what currently isn't working, retain what is, and retire items that no longer align with RuneScape's direction.

We are conscious these items are things you may have purchased through Bonds or acquired through Treasure Hunter Keys. This is why we have looked to revise or retain items in the first instance and really only resort to outright removal when we genuinely do not see a positive place that these items could inhabit in RuneScape both now and in the future.

As mentioned above, where removal is the only option, these items will be automatically converted into GP on the pre-determined date: November 23rd.

One very important caveat that we would like to add here. Many of the MTX items covered in today's blog were designed and introduced into RuneScape in a way that we would not consider acceptable for the game if we were designing them today. Amongst other issues, there are two main categories of challenge here: items that skip any form of gameplay and items that accumulate too many (overpowered) benefits into a single item.

Both of these issues present a serious challenge to RuneScape integrity, but the latter problem (benefit accumulation) is especially difficult to tackle. The overpowered accumulation of benefits into a single item prevents us retaining or revising such items in a meaningful way as doing so would effectively block us from offering or creating reward spaces in future while also causing general problems with the overall game's health. Where necessary, we've laid this out in more detail below.

It's possible that you will come across a few items in today's blog that are being affected in a way that you are unsure about. While we can't yet speak to any specifics of what we're planning for the years to come, please rest assured that we are not making any changes here without due consideration for the friction that they may introduce and we're already thinking about how to resolve that friction in future game updates. Suffice to say, you won't want to miss this year's RuneFest...

With that said, let's get into it and let us know what you think!

Revise

First up is the "Revise" category. These items generally exist to solve or alleviate a genuine gameplay friction point, making them somewhat more complex than the items slated for outright removal. We know that simply removing them could leave players feeling the impact of the problem they were designed to address!

As a result, items in this category have been reviewed individually. Where possible, we'll implement wider game improvements, balance changes, or quality-of-life updates to address the underlying issue before removing or reworking the item itself.

Slayer VIP tokens

Slayer VIP Tokens currently allow players to influence Slayer task selection outside of the Slayer progression system. Slayer VIP tokens in their current form will be removed, but we will be assessing how their functionality can be better integrated into the skill.

Slayer Masks

Slayer Masks will remain in game, though we may still tweak their mechanics to move them away from their current nature.

Spring Cleaner

While the Spring cleaner will remain in game, we will be assessing it's current functionality to ensure that it aligns with design vision and game health.

This ensures the Spring Cleaner remains focused on item processing and material recovery, while reducing overlap with systems that no longer fit our long-term design goals. Ultimately, we want the Spring Cleaner to have its identity be rooted in invention, providing a cyclical gameplay loop for the invention skill, rather than intruding into other systems too much.

Springs / Tight Springs

We will be consolidating both of these versions of Springs into a single version. All variants of springs will be converted into the retained version.

Magic Notepaper & Enchanted Notepaper

We will be consolidating both of these versions of Notepaper into a single version. All variants of notepaper will be converted into the retained version.

Loot Chest (all sizes)

The loot chest is obtained from the Mimic and we will be adjusting the drop table to remove any MTX items from it.

Lucky Weapons / Lucky Equipment

These items will be converted into a form of cosmetic to retain their unique appearances.

Dragon Trinkets / Metallic Dragon Trinkets

These trinkets provide too many benefits that are bundled into a single item (we touch more on this issue in the Portable Skilling Stations section). Removing the majority of these benefits reopens up their various functionality as potential reward spaces in future and we feel it is the right thing to do at this stage.

We understand that certain communities, such as clue chaser players, rely on teleport items like Trinkets to swiftly traverse the world. With that in mind, we are retaining the teleport functionality of the trinkets for the time being. However, we are carefully considering what we can do to address this matter in future, and we aim to tackle it sooner rather than later.

Clover Necklaces (Shiny, Sparkling, Dazzling)

We will be removing the functionality of these items as they predominantly drop items that are being removed, but you will still be able to use the cosmetic version.

Skilling Backpack / Powerpack

We will be removing the functionality of these items as they predominantly drop items that are being removed, but you will still be able to use the cosmetic version.

Aurelian cape / Butterfly Jar (all sizes)

We will be removing the functionality of these items, but you will still be able to use the cosmetic version.

Life Refresh

This item is used to reset the cooldown of defensive items such as the Sign of Life. We are removing the Life Refresh item and, as this is the final feature that would use "Marks of War", we plan to remove this currency as well. We are continuing to discuss the impact of this change on the Sign of Life.

Retain

While the items in this category may provide small amounts of instant XP or progression benefits, they are generally limited in availability and cannot be meaningfully stockpiled or optimised to bypass core training methods.

We've weighed the impact these items have on game integrity against the disruption that would come from removing them entirely. In these cases, we don't believe the benefits of removal outweigh the potential loss of utility or the frustration it could create for players who already own or use them.

As a result, these items will remain in the game unchanged for the foreseeable future. We'll continue to monitor their impact, but at this time they are considered compatible with our vision for RuneScape's future progression and reward systems.

Soul Reaper Refresh

Following the overhaul to the Soul Reaper system introduced as part of the Dailyscape update, we are happy with where these items have landed and don't feel like removing them is worthwhile. That being said, we are also aware that the Soul Reaper system overall isn't quite perfect yet in its current form and have a number of thoughts on how we can improve it.

Luminite Injector

This is one of three repeatable and consumable rewards from the Artisans workshop. As these were designed with a gameplay loop in mind while also serving as a point of attraction for community skilling we feel they should stay in RuneScape. They also provide a good use for Respect and are well integrated into the game.

Mimic Kill Token

As mentioned above, we will be updating the Loot Chest to better fit current design ideas and so the Mimic tokens can remain.

Summoning Focus / Spirit Gems

Originally introduced as Treasure Hunter items, they have since been added into the game via more reasonable methods and as such we do not see the need to remove them at this point.

Remove

Finally there is the Remove category. These are the most straightforward items to address. At their core, they exist primarily to grant instant XP rather than enhance or support the skilling experience. Because they can be stockpiled and used at the most efficient moments, they allow players to bypass the training and progression loops that sit at the heart of RuneScape's gameplay.

As a result, these items will be removed from the game, alongside any systems that create, reward, or distribute them. Where removing an item would also eliminate its only practical purpose, we've assessed it on a case-by-case basis. Wearable items may be preserved as cosmetic overrides where appropriate, while non-wearable items will be retired entirely.

Our goal is to ensure progression remains meaningful, while preserving cosmetic value wherever possible.

Lamps of all types / Stars of all types (excluding Radiant Stars)

Any leftover MTX Lamps and Stars from Treasure Hunter promotions, such as Prismatic or Phoenix Lamps, will be removed. This change will not affect Radiant Stars from the Marketplace, as these are an intended purchasable item and will continue to function as normal.

Proteans (all types) / Protean Packs (all sizes) / Unstable Proteans (all types) / Protean Processor (all types) / Box of Protean Processors / Protean Prolonger / Protean Powerups / Protean Chest

Proteans grant direct XP while completely bypassing RuneScape's core skilling loops. They require no resources and little to no gameplay engagement to use, making them incompatible with our vision for meaningful progression. As a result, Protean Items will be removed from the game.

Additionally, items such as Prolongers and Protean Powerups serve no purpose in a game without Proteans and will therefore also be removed.

Combat Training Dummy / Skill Training Dummy (all types) / Dummy Processor / Box of Dummy Processors

Similar to Proteans, these grant direct XP while completely bypassing RuneScape's core skilling loops and will be removed.

Pulse Cores / Advanced Pulse Cores / Cinder Cores

These items accelerate XP gains and provide random skilling buffs, but they don't address any underlying gameplay or design issues. Their primary purpose is to increase the rate at which players earn XP and consume Bonus XP, rather than improve the skilling experience itself and so they will be removed.

Portable Skilling Stations (all types) (EXCEPT Luminite Injector) / Portable Packs (all sizes)

Portable Skilling Stations are a key item that offers an "MTX Item" tier of functionality - that is to say that they bundle so many benefits into a single item that they are extremely overpowered. Should we have sought to fold them into a gameplay loop (such as Invention), they would still have required drastic changes and reductions in functionality to become compatible with our game philosophy. Removing them at this stage reopens the huge amount of reward space that they absorbed, which allows us to reintroduce some of their benefits to the game in a more meaningful manner in the years to come - should we choose to.

We also understand the concern that removing portable skilling stations will have negative impacts on community skilling hubs. There are two things to address regarding this thought:

In the first instance, we believe that the community hubs that clustered around skilling stations (such as Fort Forinthry and the Varrock Grand Exchange) forced player populations to be concentrated in that one area rather than dispersed across the world. With less need to skill in one specific universal location, we feel that more players will spread out across the world, making Gielinor feel more alive again.

The second note to make here is that we also know from our MTX experiments in 2025 that healthier forms of community hubs persisted even when Portable Skilling Stations were not available.

With that in mind, we understand that removing Portable Skilling Stations will impact community hubs. However, their removal will not outright prevent hubs from appearing and we believe that the resulting dispersion of players across the world will lead to a Gielinor that feels more alive and more satisfying to travel through, meeting other players in distinct locations.

With the above in mind, Portable Skilling Stations will be removed.

As a final note: The Brooch of the Gods will have its effect relating to Portable Skilling Stations removed as the Portable Skilling Stations will also have ceased to exist. This will not be replaced with any other effect.

Silverhawk Boots / Silverhawk Feathers / Silverhawk Down

Silverhawk Boots are the ultimate MTX item design. No input is required whatsoever to gain large amounts of XP and they completely bypass everything related to the Agility skill. We have used our rebalancing updates this year to address Agility XP gains and buffed them as part of the updates.

Nevertheless, we understand that their removal may leave some players feeling forced to engage with a high-intensity skill that they feel is outdated compared to other RuneScape skills. We very much appreciate that the removal of Silverhawk boots may be challenging and we are not doing this without already having some good ideas for how to address this friction in the time ahead.

Knowledge Bombs (all sizes) / Superior Knowledge Bomb / Box of Superior Knowledge Bombs / Prime Gaming Knowledge Bomb

While these items do engage with RuneScape's core skilling loops, their sole purpose was to accelerate progression through MTX. They didn't address any gameplay friction points or smooth out underlying design issues. They instead provided a substantial XP boost that significantly undermined the normal gameplay, so they will be removed.

D&D reset tokens (all types)

These items will be removed. As part of the Dailyscape overhaul earlier this year, we removed the primary methods of obtaining them. For activities where these tokens played a significant role in repeating a D&D for additional XP or rewards, we'll review the activity itself and make any necessary balance adjustments.

Slayer Wildcards (all types)

Functionally, these items act as a way to speed up Slayer XP gains and bypass portions of the intended progression curve. As a result, they will be removed as part of this initiative.

Dungeoneering Token Box (all sizes) / Cash Bags (all sizes)

These items exist solely as containers for existing currencies, rather than providing any unique gameplay value of their own. As part of this cleanup, we'll automatically claim the contents of any remaining containers directly to player accounts and remove the items themselves from the game.

We'll also be removing these items from any drop tables, reward pools, or creation sources. In cases where the container remains part of a reward flow, we'll award the currency directly instead. For example, Archaeology collections that currently reward Dungeoneering Token Boxes will award Dungeoneering Tokens directly, removing the extra step without changing the reward itself.

Deathtouched Darts / Box of Deathtouched Darts

These items completely bypass the need to defeat bosses through combat, allowing players to obtain rewards without engaging with the core combat experience. While we recognise that they can provide a convenient alternative for some players, we believe the better long-term solution is to make combat and bossing more accessible, rewarding, and enjoyable, rather than offering mechanics that circumvent them entirely.

Dwarven Tools (all types) / Dwarven Toolbox (all sizes)

These tools increase either resource output or XP gains within their respective skills. While they still require players to engage with core gameplay loops, the significant boosts they provide disrupt both the intended pacing of progression and the wider in-game economy.

Experience Chest / Skilling Chest / Loot Pinatas (normal, summer, christmas) / Smashing Relics

These items are just another vessel to get items that we are already removing such as dummies and lamps and so will be removed.

Restored artefact replicator / Fixate Recharge Tokens / Unfinished business / Imp Soul in a Box / Token of the Lost / Lost keepsakes

These items were designed as Treasure Hunter rewards, providing boosts to things like chronote acquisition & ritual outputs. Rather than enhancing the gameplay experience, they accelerate progression and reward rates without requiring any additional engagement with the skill itself and will thus be removed.

Please note that we are not removing Fixate as an ability and it will still function and recoup charges as it does currently.

Crafting Cleaner / Fletching Cleaner / Artisanal Gears

These cleaners bypass mechanics that are intended to be part of the Invention and Magic gameplay experience, offering convenience without addressing any meaningful gameplay problem. With the cleaners removed, the associated gear items would no longer serve a purpose, so both the cleaners and their related gear will be retired.

Stone of meditation / Rock of Resilience / Sceptre of Enchantment / Coin of Enchantment / Oil of Enchantment

These are items that provided flat XP buffs but served no other purpose and do not include a form of meaningful gameplay loop. Additionally, their current status of not being widely available meant that they could be an item that causes frustration for those players who do not have them. At this time, we do not see a meaningful reason to maintain their existence in the game and will therefore be removing them.

The Sceptre of Enchantment's visuals will be retained as a cosmetic override option for those that have it unlocked.

Battleships / Royal Battleship kits

In the same vein as dummies, these grant direct XP in construction while bypassing core skilling loops and will therefore be removed.

Antique Chest

Antique Chests are a Treasure Hunter exclusive item which simply provide more Treasure Hunter items. They are being removed from the game.

Old items

The following items are legacy rewards from much older promotions, and only a small number remain in circulation today. While their removal isn't a major gameplay priority, this is the ideal opportunity to complete the MTX cleanup and retire them alongside other legacy items. As a result, the following items will be removed:

  • Skill card deck
  • Prismatic skill card
  • Crafting catalyst
  • Fire poi
  • Fire breathing solution
  • Fire stone
  • Firewood
  • Novtumber Festival seed
  • Harvest Festival seeds
  • Cocktail shaker (Build A Beach)
  • Material Packs (both small & large variants in all available skill variants)

Currencies

Over the years, a variety of currencies have been introduced through Treasure Hunter promotions and limited-time MTX events. As part of this cleanup, we're looking to remove as many of these legacy currencies as possible to reduce unnecessary complexity and improve the overall player experience.

This would mainly include the following:

  • Lunar Spheres
  • Pestilent Gem shard
  • Gem of Aspiration
  • Lunar Shards
  • Sigils

If you cannot afford anything with your currency, it will be cleaned up. Where there is only a single thing to do with the currency these will automatically be used. Otherwise, the currency will be left for you to do with as you wish.

H'oddments / Heartments

H'oddments and Heartments will also be retired but we will be providing one final chance to use any such currency that you may still have. We will be reopening the respective stores either during the Harvest Hollow or the Well of Restoration event. These would be with the same store inventory that you are familiar with (barring anything that is also being removed or that has already been shifted into a different part of the game) - should there be nothing of interest to you in these stores, you will also be able to donate these currencies to the Well of Restoration.

Any remaining H'oddments will be removed at the end of the Harvest Hollow event.

Like with everything else, at the end of the restoration event, any remaining heartments will be removed and will be replaced with GP.

That's it for today - as a reminder, here is the schedule as listed above:

  • Today, we are letting you know what we have planned for all associated items.
  • We will run our next DoubleXP event in November. We are planning to make this the best opportunity for you to use up any remaining MTX items you may have banked.
  • Shortly after the DXP event ends we will run a shorter MTX send-off event, which will be an opportunity for you to get rid of any MTX items that you did not want to use for their designed purpose.
  • At the end of this second event, the MTX items remaining in the game will be removed, revised or retained according to the details shared further down in this blog.
  • The final date, by which all items must be used up, is November 23rd, 2026.
